Principals’ Quality Assurance Strategies and Teachers’ Job Performance in Public Senior Secondary Schools in Niger State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study examined “Principals’ Quality Assurance Strategies and Teachers’ Effectiveness in Public Senior Secondary Schools in Niger state, Nigeria” Seven (7) research quuestions and six null hypotheses guided the study. The descriptive survey research design was employed for the study, the population for this study comprised all the 5,576 teachers located in the 416 public senior secondary schools spread across the three senatorial districts in Niger state. The sample size for this study comprised 42 schools and principals (10% of the population), and 357 teachers in the 416 public senior secondary schools in Niger state. The instrument for the study is two researcher’s structured questionnaire titled: “Principals’ Quality Assurance Strategies Questionnaire” (PQASQ) for the teachers; and “Teachers Effectiveness Questionnaire” (TEQ) for principals. These was pilot tested and yielded reliability coefficients of 0.85 and 0.75 respectively. Four statistical methods were used in the data analysis; the mean score, standard deviation (SD) was used to answer the research questions. In the hypothesis testing, the Multiple Regression the Person Product Moment Correlation Analysis was used to test the hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed that school administrators in Niger state public senior secondary schools adopts various quality assurance strategies which include: the monitoring strategy, instructional supervision strategy, facilities maintenance strategy, evaluation and feedback strategy and staff professional development strategy. The teachers positively rated their principals and were effective on their job. The finding of the study also revealed that there was a significant relationship between quality assurance strategies and teachers effectiveness in public secondary schools in Niger state, Nigeria. However, it was recommended among others that school administrators should continuously employ and adopt various quality assurance strategies so as to enhance teachers’ positive job effectiveness.
