Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic caused unprecedented disruptions to the global tourism sector, and Uzbekistan’s rapidly developing tourism industry was no exception. Before 2020, the country experienced significant growth in international arrivals, supported by government initiatives to simplify visa regimes, invest in infrastructure, and promote cultural heritage. However, border closures, mobility restrictions, and heightened health concerns led to a dramatic collapse in visitor numbers, revenue losses, and widespread unemployment across tourism-dependent industries. This paper examines the scale of COVID-19’s impact on Uzbekistan’s tourism sector, analyzing both the immediate economic and social consequences and the government’s recovery strategies. Measures such as domestic tourism promotion, health and safety protocols, and digital transformation are evaluated for their effectiveness in restoring sectoral growth. The study concludes by proposing forward-looking strategies to enhance resilience, adaptability, and crisis preparedness in Uzbekistan’s tourism industry, ensuring sustainable development in the face of future global disruptions.
