Abstract

This study examines the socio-historical trajectory of women’s education in Uttar Pradesh from 1947 to 2000, focusing on its regional characteristics, policy frameworks, and socio-religious movements. Special attention is given to the influence of reformist organizations such as the Arya Samaj, the impact of governmental initiatives, and the role of women leaders in shaping educational and empowerment outcomes. The analysis highlights the disparities between rural and urban female literacy, the intersection of caste, class, and religion in determining access to education, and the evolving policies of both state and central governments. The findings suggest that while substantial progress was made in terms of female literacy and institutional expansion, socio-cultural barriers continued to limit equitable access to education in Uttar Pradesh compared to Southern states like Tamil Nadu.
