Abstract

Background: Appendicitis is a worldwide illness. In most nations, the prevalence of appendicitis remains steady. Objective: Our study aimed to assess the Outcome of appendectomy surgery and identifying the impact on intestinal adhesions in patients with appendectomy after surgery. Patients and methods: The study presents clinical and demographic data from 84 appendectomy patients to evaluate surgery outcomes on the digestive system. The study presents clinical and demographic data from 84 appendectomy patients to evaluate surgery outcomes on the digestive system. The study included male and female patients between the ages of 20 and 60. Our study captured diagnostic outcomes of patients who underwent appendectomy, collected from different hospitals in Iraq between 17th June 2022 to 15th September 2023. To establish our methodology, we conducted a comparison between two groups based on the types of surgery employed. Our study examined the clinical outcomes for two types of appendectomy surgery.

The first group consisted of patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery, with a sample size of 44 cases. The second group consisted of patients who underwent open surgery, with a sample size of 40 cases. Results and discussion:  The clinical and demographic outcomes revealed a rise in the rate of cases for patients who underwent appendectomy and were over 40 years of age, comprising 68% of the total patients. In terms of gender distribution, our findings indicate that almost 70% of male patients underwent appendectomy surgery, compared to 30% of females. Regarding symptoms status, we found that 30% of patients experienced abdominal pain and 23% experienced nausea. We utilized an imaging test for the diagnosis of patients undergoing appendectomy and found that the use of computed tomography alone showed a determination of 60% in patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery and 50% in patients who underwent open surgery.

Furthermore, patients who underwent multiple imaging tests accounted for 25% of those under laparoscopic surgery and 32.5% of those under open surgery. Our clinical findings regarding intestinal adhesions showed that the infection factor was got 10 (22.73%) for patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery and 12 (30%) for those who underwent open surgery. Conclusions: The study outcomes confirmed that laparoscopic appendectomy represents a safe and effective option as compared to open appendectomy for Iraqi patients. Additionally, it proved to be a valuable treatment for patients suffering from intestinal adhesions post-operation.
