Abstract

Hypersensitivity of the teeth is characterized by the sudden appearance of aching or acute pain. The pain occurs for no obvious reason and just as suddenly disappears. Many patients complain that they cannot safely eat ice cream, citrus fruits or sweets, because any of these products literally makes their teeth ache. There are many reasons for the development of hypersensitivity – the consequences of the carious process, increased tooth abrasion, enamel chips and various types of non-carious processes, including wedge-shaped defect, hypoplasia, erosion and necrosis. Very often, hypersensitivity is observed when the tooth tissues are worn away, when the loss of enamel reaches the dentinoemal boundary. However, not with all types of abrasion, hypersensitivity is expressed in the same way. Thus, with enamel erosion, hypersensitivity is often observed, while with a wedge-shaped defect it almost does not occur.  Sometimes sharp sensitivity is observed when the necks of the teeth are already slightly exposed (by 1-3 mm).  In addition to the painful reaction of the teeth resulting from the action of local stimuli (the so-called non-systemic hypersensitivity), tooth pain can also occur in connection with certain pathological conditions of the body (systemic or generalized hypersensitivity).
