This study investigated the impact of educational cartoons on vocabulary development among preschool children in Oyo Town, Nigeria. Vocabulary development is essential for early literacy, influencing reading comprehension, communication, and overall academic success. The study had three specific purposes, three research questions, and three null hypotheses. This study was anchored on Social Cognitive Theory by Albert Bandura in 1986.
A mixed-method research design was employed, integrating both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected using a Vocabulary Assessment Test, an Observation Checklist, and Semi-Structured Interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using statistical methods, while qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis.
The findings revealed a significant positive impact of educational cartoons on vocabulary development. Children exposed to educational cartoons demonstrated substantial improvements in vocabulary, with interactive and repetitive elements proving particularly effective.
It was recommended among others that educators and curriculum developers should integrate educational cartoons into the preschool curriculum, parents should also be encouraged to use educational cartoons as a supplementary tool at home and professional development programs for early childhood educators should include training on the effective use of educational cartoons.
