Abstract

Dysphemism is a linguistic device characterized by the use of unpleasant terms to describe people, situations, or concepts, often with the intent to provoke, insult, or emphasize a negative aspect. This article explores the definition of dysphemism, its various methods, and its implications in communication. Key methods of dysphemism include direct insults, vulgar language, animalistic comparisons, hyperbole, and the use of sarcasm and irony. Each method serves to amplify the negative connotation of the subject, shaping perceptions and influencing interactions. While dysphemism can be an effective rhetorical tool in certain contexts, it also raises ethical concerns regarding its potential to escalate conflicts and perpetuate negative stereotypes. Understanding dysphemism and its applications is essential for navigating language in both personal and public discourse, fostering awareness of the impact that word choice can have on societal attitudes and relationships.
