Abstract

This paper titled “Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education in Nigeria: Problems and Solutions: was written with the objectives of analyzing the problems facing mass literacy, adult and non-formal education in Nigeria. Secondary data were used in the paper. The Secondary data were collected from print and online publications. The paper identified inadequate funding, shortage of professional facilitators, inadequate infrastructure facilities, shortage of instructional materials, poor supervision, insecurity, poor capacity building programme, poor remuneration of facilitators, inadequate data/information and corruption as problems facing mass literacy, adult and non-formal education in Nigeria. Based on these problems identified, the paper suggested the following; adequate investment in mass literacy, and adult and non-formal education in Nigeria. Both the Federal, State and Local governments should increase investment in the sector. Government should employ more facilitators in mass literacy, adult and non-formal education across the country. There should be investment in the infrastructure facilities of educational institutions across the country. This will help the mass literacy, adult and non-formal education to have more equipped facilities to use for their programme etc.
