Abstract

This paper examines the benefits of training leaders in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The paper is a review paper. The paper used secondary data. The secondary data were collected from print and online publications. The paper concluded that constant training of academic leaders in the tertiary institutions in Nigeria is very vital to the development of tertiary institutions and the realization of the tertiary institutions’ goals. Types of academic training identified include; online leadership training, leadership conferences, executive leadership training, professional training seminars and leadership workshops benefits of training for tertiary education leaders include; improvement in leadership performance, attainment of tertiary education goals, effective resources management, improvement in managerial skills and selection of best leadership style. Based on the findings, the paper recommends that since training is very critical to the development of tertiary institutions in Nigeria, the government and stakeholders in the management of tertiary institutions in Nigeria should ensure an increase in the funding of training programmes for academic leaders in the tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
